Islip Manor High Welcomes Willow Tree Y5 Students for Autumn Science Investigations
The Islip Manor High Science Department was delighted to welcome Year 5 students from Willow Tree Primary School for a series of exciting autumn-themed science investigations. The two big questions of the day were: “Why do leaves change colour?” and “Why do slugs and snails need slime?”
Led by our talented Year 10 Triple Science students, these Gopher Lab workshops, developed by the Royal Society of Biology, gave younger pupils the chance to explore scientific ideas through fun and hands-on experiments. After successfully applying to take part in the programme, we were thrilled to be selected — giving us the opportunity to connect local primary and secondary schools and share access to specialist science equipment and expertise.
Earlier this year, our Year 10 students completed training on how to deliver these workshops — and on the day, they were simply outstanding. They showed real confidence and courage as they led the sessions, asking thoughtful questions, engaging with the younger pupils, and explaining concepts clearly. Their teamwork, creativity, and commitment shone through as they collaborated to design and deliver engaging investigations.
The visiting pupils from Willow Tree had a fantastic time exploring our science labs. Highlights included meeting our giant African land snails and creating chromatograms from autumn leaves. Both schools benefited from the experience — Willow Tree students enjoyed using real laboratory equipment, while our Islip Manor students gained valuable leadership and communication skills.
Our Year 10s were buzzing with pride afterwards, sharing how much they enjoyed the day and already brainstorming ways to make future sessions even better. We look forward to welcoming more local primary schools soon to inspire the next generation of young scientists!
