Y12 Biology and Chemistry Students Gain Insight into Medical Careers

On Thursday 14th May, our Y12 Biology and Chemistry A Level students attended an exciting Medical Conference at Notting Hill and Ealing School. The conference provided students with a valuable opportunity to explore the wide range of careers available within the medical and healthcare sectors.

There was a packed programme of speakers throughout the day, including dentists, consultants, aesthetic doctors, nursing home owners and bioengineers specialising in Motor Control and Augmentation. Students were able to choose from a variety of talks during each session, allowing them to focus on the areas they were most interested in.

As part of the conference, students also worked collaboratively with pupils from other schools to prepare and deliver presentations. A special mention goes to Shakira, who worked alongside a trained dentist and students from another school to present on the use of stem cells in dentistry. Shakira delivered an excellent presentation and represented the school brilliantly.

Students also had the opportunity to take part in practical suturing activities, which they found both challenging and enjoyable.

Reflecting on the day, Shakira said:
“The medical conference was really informative and interesting. I mostly enjoyed the more practical sides of it though as it kept us more engaged and focused on what we were learning about. I think it was great they gave us three presentations to choose from each session so we could choose what we would be most interested in.”

Tomi commented:
“A very informative and intriguing event which showed me many possible pathways I may choose to pursue in the future.”

Nina said:
“The medical conference helped me expand the different options in the medical field and helped me understand the steps in how to get into the medical field in the first place.”

Zara added:
“The conference was quite informative on the subject of medicine and careers. It was engaging because it allowed a hands-on experience with suturing.”

Nancy also shared:
“The conference was very insightful and interesting, as I got to know and understand that there are medical uses for Botox, not just aesthetics, and I got an insight into what being an eye doctor is about.”

Overall, the conference was an inspiring and informative experience which gave students a greater understanding of the many pathways available within medicine and healthcare.
